Spring Break is a time of excitement not fear, right? People are getting amped to hop on their planes for their next vacation. Maybe a resort in the tropics or just a getaway with their family. Well, this year might be a little different. After a series of recent plane crashes, fear and uncertainty regarding peoples next flight have started to creep into their minds.
This holds true even at Saint Viator. 43% of Saint Viator students surveyed, stated that they are more nervous than usual about flying considering the recent news.
“You never know what is going to happen and the increase of flights makes flying a lot more nerve wracking. Planes never used to crash and now they are. It gets me thinking about what could happen,” said Landon Vermazen ‘27. Many are feeling similarly.
“I am not necessarily scared of the plane crashing when I am on it, I am scared of the idea it brings to airliners and the future of flying. The government has fired hundreds of air traffic control workers due to the crashes, which in result, could cause more,” Gianluca Scarsella ‘27. While many fly in fear, others are not letting it bother them.
While these are real fears for many, in reality, air travel continues to be one of the safest forms of transportation. According to data from the National Transportation Safety Board, January and February typically have 20 deadly plane crashes per month. In 2025, there were only ten fatal accidents in January and six in February. This shows that while it feels as if there have been more plane crashes, data says otherwise.
“I am not afraid of flying. The percentage of flights not crashing versus crashing is drastic. Look at the amount of people that fly each day and are safe. It far outweighs the crashes,” said Mia Lund ‘27. While no form of transportation is completely safe, experts continue to stress the fact that the majority of flights operate without incident. With Spring Break approaching, travelers should know that while their fears are valid given the recent news, the data says that they should not let fear stand in the way of their enjoyment.
