In this season’s matchup against the Carmel Corsairs—a heated, multi-sport rivalry—the girls volleyball team made a statement defending Mahoney Court in a clean two set victory. Entering the game with a 24-9 record, the Lions offense started slow in the opening set. After tying up at 8-8, the Lions pulled ahead to secure a four-point lead. With the help of some excellent individual plays—eight kills—the Lions were able to win the first set against stiff Corsair resistance: final score 25-23.
Following the win in the first set, the Lions entered the second set with a revitalized offense. Starting with a 5-0 lead bolstered by a kill and an ace, the Lions had little struggle pulling ahead, maintaining a 15-7 lead at about halfway. With a continued powerful offensive statement of seven kills, the Lions easily won the second set 25-11.
“We’ve been working on playing [like in the second set] all year,” said head coach Charlie Curtin. “We want to control the tempo and control the ball.”
With the win against the Corsairs, the Lions ended their regular season with a record of twenty-five wins and nine losses.
“I’m most proud of our improvement over the year,” said senior Madeleine Gauthier. “We’ve gained a lot of confidence.”
The Lions, as indicated by their regular season performance, are expected to do well in the upcoming post-season matches.
“We should definitely go far,” said senior Isabella Botero. “We have a good chance at winning sectionals—we just need to bring confidence!”
“We’re going to keep working on setter-hitter connections, confidence, and adding new plays [in preparation]” said Coach Curtin. “But I’m proud of this team’s fight and ability to fight back.”
