Nintendo surprised fans this January by revealing the long-fabled “Nintendo Switch” successor, the “Nintendo Switch 2,” which will be released in 2025. The reveal trailer, titled “Nintendo Switch 2—First Look Trailer,” revealed little information about the upcoming console, and much of what had been shown had been leaked beforehand. Because of this, while there were surprises in the trailer, it left more to be desired.
A significant focus of the trailer was the new “Joy-Con”-like controllers, which have been the subject of much debate.
“It’s pretty original, it hasn’t been seen before,” said sophomore Kennet Doyle. The controllers attach to the side of the console without being slid on; instead, they are connected to a small indent on the side of the console. Two features of the new controller include a “C-Button” and potential mouse functionality. Little is known about the mysterious “C-Button” on the controllers located at the bottom of the right controller. Mouse functionality is an unconfirmed feature. However, gaming news sites such as IGN and Nintendo Life theorize that a part of the trailer, which sees the controllers sliding across a surface on some form of an attachment, teases this feature. In addition, a closer look at the side of the controller reveals what an infrared camera could be.
Another non-hardware part of the trailer was clipped from a new Mario Kart featuring classic character redesigns. The clips show that the game could have 24-player matches, as shown by the 24 start positions. In addition, the new design for Donkey Kong has led to much debate.
“It’s a little off-putting,” said senior Owen Kelly. Other than Mario Kart, not much is known about the system’s games.
“One thing I kind of dislike is that you can’t use the older games with the Switch.” said Math Teacher Mrs. Brankin.
Nintendo made sure to assure fans that the “Nintendo Switch 2” will change this. A small portion of the reveal trailer was dedicated to showing fans that old “Nintendo Switch” games will be able to be played on the “Nintendo Switch 2”. In addition to all of these games, some small indie studios announced that their game(s) would be coming to Nintendo Switch 2, but aside from that, little is known about the console’s games.
In addition, Nintendo announced that a “Nintendo Switch 2” direct would be held on April 2, 2025, followed by events in certain cities where players could try the console out. Despite the little information the company, 2025 seems to be ushering in the next chapter of gaming. After all the years of rumors and speculation, the “Nintendo Switch 2” will soon be in homes around the world.
