Everyone’s favorite web-slinging hero is back in action with the release of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” back in July of this year.
With Tom Holland starring as Spider-Man once again, fans and critics applaud his phenomenal performance. Not only did the film gross $927 million worldwide and $360 million domestically on its opening weekend, but, according to Arise News, it’s “the second-biggest global debut in box office history.” Additionally, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” also surpassed “Avengers: Endgame”, which only grossed $357 million from its domestic debut during its opening weekend, according to an article from Variety magazine. Evidently, this film was highly anticipated by fans across the globe, receiving a 90% critic score on and a 97% by audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. One critic going by the alias of Heidi M states that she felt the film was “entertaining, engaging, and well-balanced”, but does not contain as much action as watchers might hope for. Some audience members expressed that the movie was more about Peter Parker than it was about Spider-Man, which did not end up causing too much tumult. Sean Gerald, another critic, praised the film for making this exact choice, feeling that the change in Peter Parker’s character was necessary, since it made this Spider-Man feel like the true, authentic Peter Parker; “Peter Parker has felt less like a brand extension and more like a person” This movie also acted as a return to film for The Punisher, a niche comic book anti-hero who has finally found a more mainstream audience through the movie. Some noted that his character served as comic-relief, highly contrasting his melancholic and grim nature in the 2017 TV series, “The Punisher”. One critic deemed it “the worst Punisher [affiliated] project in a long time.” Despite this, the author of this article still recognizes that The Punisher is still a delightfully entertaining character that could fit one well with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It seems as though the bold choices made by the film were generally well digested by audience members across the board. From casual enjoyers to diehard mega-fans, the prevailing verdict is that this was the most outstanding Spider-Man film to date.
