Once upon a time, Jackie Chan was the ambassador of action movies from Hong Kong; he made a household name synonymous with packed intensity scenes sprinkled with family humor and well-liked household names from Hollywood. Throughout the late nineties and most of the 2000s, Chan held his reign with a resume of worldwide bonafide titles such as “Shangai Nights”, “Spy Next Door”, and “The Medallion”. The frenzy of martial arts in movies fizzled out when younger generations were inclined towards holding a gaming console or another electronic device in their hands instead of exploring the possibilities of martial arts by engaging in playful interactions with friends or by signing up for classes in an academy. Years have passed since, and the giant action movie beast, although still counting with a loyal but reduced following, is a genre that has been put to sleep unless it is part of an animated movie of the likes of “Kung Fu Panda.” Recently, a Vietnamese-American actor, Ke Huy Quan or Jonathan Quan, was inspired by Jackie Chan’s golden era of action movies from Hong Kong to reintroduce the genre of martial arts wide audience movies, which led him to attach his name to the project that was released in theaters on February 7, 2025, just in time for Valentines titled “Love Hurts.” Directed by Jonathan Eusebio, this movie is a comedy where Quan is the protagonist. Before the upcoming film, Mr. Ke Huy Quan had his name under the credits of “Indiana Jones”, directed by Steven Spielberg. He is also a University of California Art Department graduate who proudly performed in the hilarious “Just in Time” for Valentines. In this film, Quan is a Milwaukee native who works in real estate, a perfect setting for the action-filled sequence where mishaps and the turbulent family history of three, which includes Marvin’s brother, a man on the other side of the law that forces Marvin (Quan) to confront his pass which consists of the illegal enterprises that are part of his sibling’s life and the pain and confusion between the fraternal love and the criminal actions of his family member. Including engaging laughs, the film is a solid E for effort and entertainment for all.
