Popular Netflix show Outer Banks has sparked controversy throughout the country with shocking decisions made by the show’s writers this season. The questionable events of the newly released season four have sent fans into an online outrage on numerous social media platforms.
The series, which follows a group of teenagers nicknamed “the Pogues” on their search for treasure, has become one of the most popular shows on Netflix, with the cast and characters becoming treasured by Outer Banks viewers. One character in particular, JJ Maybank, played by Rudy Pankow, has been a fan-favorite since the show first aired. His loyalty and evident character development have made him an easily likable and comforting character for many viewers. For these reasons, JJ’s unexpected death in the season four finale has caused shockwaves among fans.
“I had a feeling that it would end that way for him, but I still felt injustice for his character,” said Freshman Aria Shirazi.
Some agreed that his passing would set an exciting precedent for season five, but most argue that his death was unnecessary and easily avoidable.
“I’m not an emotional person, but I was definitely teary-eyed watching the ending to this season,” said P .E. Teacher Sobieszczyk.
Angered and betrayed fans have even gone after Rudy and his co-stars, demanding explanations for their favorite character’s untimely passing. Showrunners have stated that JJ’s death was the plan from the beginning, but fans quickly responded with accusations towards Rudy and his fellow cast members on set. Supposedly, Madison Bailey, who plays Kiara Carrera and JJ’s love interest, had a falling out with Rudy while filming season three, which created an uncomfortable atmosphere on set. Fans also noted the lack of chemistry between characters this season and the poor and seemingly lazy writing of the final episodes.
“I don’t even think I’ll watch the next season after watching the last episode, ” said Freshman Katherine Shannon.
After watching the fourth season, most fans are conflicted, and it’s now apparent that the writers must find a way to redeem themselves with the installment of the fifth and final season, for which the pre-production process has begun aimed to be released in 2026.
