Saint Viator sports teams are composed of many parts. There are players in the spotlight, coaches hollering on the sidelines and trainers watching in the corner. But what most forget is one of the most important team members of all—the managers.
Managers are non-competing members of a sports team that essentially act as assistants to the coaches. While they may not be in the competition limelight, their contributions behind the scenes are crucial for both athletes and coaches.
“Managers are the glue that holds a team together,” said varsity wrestling coach Mike Schneider. “On the wrestling team, managers help keep score, videotape matches and contribute to team morale. On a big team it can be difficult for the coaches to keep track of dozens of athletes competing at the same time, making managers a crucial part of the team.”
Coach Schneider continued to explain the importance of managers, highlighting how their help has proved invaluable in making sure athletes are in the right place at the right time. They also help run practices, leading to athletes improving faster and better individually and as a team.
“Without our managers, we would not be nearly as successful as we are today.”
Managing has many benefits for the individual as well. Managing helps students build personal relationships with athletes, and also helps them gain valuable experience which will translate well to future careers and aspirations.
“Being a manager at Viator has opened up my social circle a lot. I have been able to meet so many new people,” said senior dance manager Brianna Santucci. “Through my time managing, I learned that you shouldn’t stick with just one sport or group of people and the value of a broad circle. I had a lot of fun with my experience, and it was a great resume builder. If anyone wants to become a manager, they should reach out to the coaches. The help is always appreciated!”
Team managers serve as unsung heroes of sports
