Reading books in class is often tedious. The language used by authors in different time periods can be more difficult to comprehend for many students. However, when students are allowed to choose the story they read, it often becomes an escape. It seems that many students understand this joy of escape. Even the Viator Voice October Poll reported that book club was one of the most intriguing clubs for students to join this school year.
Moderated by Ms. Ruege, the book club meets once a month, usually on a Monday or Wednesday, depending on the students’ schedules. When the Book Club gathers in Room 117, the facilitator of the club, Dani Dooley ‘26, creates activities for the students to work on to help them have a better understanding of and deeper insights on the story that they read.
“[Students] make Kahoots, talk about the book and sometimes they’ll show movie clips if there is a book and a movie that goes with it,” said Ms. Ruege.
Members will also often go into a profound conversation about the characters in the story. Who did they not like? Who is interesting to them? What plotlines made you curious? The thought-provoking conversations experienced at the club can make for a joyous time. The book club has around 12-15 members at each meeting, but they encourage students to join even if they haven’t read the story.
“Kids get freaked out when they don’t totally read the book, but a lot of the kids will actually talk to each other,” said Ms. Ruege,.
Members inform their peers about the story, even if someone didn’t read the book. This makes the conversation informative and entertaining.
“Everyone in the club seems so genuine, and I would love to hear about their next meeting and the types of books they read,” one student said, commenting on the vibe of the club.
“We have snacks!” said Ms. Ruege, adding on another positive.
So, if students are looking for a fun club to spend their Monday or Wednesday afternoon at or to continue a series they enjoy, they can read on at book club.
