One of Laika’s crown jewels “Coraline” re-entered theaters in August for a spectacular 3D viewing, celebrating the movie’s 15th anniversary. The 2009 film “Coraline,” directed by Henry Selick, became a cult classic among the stop-motion animation community. Produced under the company Laika, the movie features the protagonist, Coraline Jones. This film depicts Coraline’s life moving to the Pink Palace Apartments in Oregon, where she tries to cope with the traumatic move. One day, Coraline stumbles upon some alternate dimension, where she meets doppelgängers of her parents and neighbors. As she begins to learn of the mal-intent of her “Other-Mother,” Coraline must set out on her own to unravel the web of lies before her. The movie has been splendidly received, as it has been given a score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 80 on Metacritic. However, the most awe-inspiring factor about the movie is the animation itself. The majority of “Coraline” is created using stop-motion animation, and its completion took a whopping 4 years. An extraordinary showcase of the animator’s dedication was on display during a scene taking place within a cherry blossom forest. Every individual blossom was a piece of popcorn that was delicately painted pink; the process took a total of around 800 hours by itself. Additionally, the existence of 28 identical Coraline figures and 15,000 face replacements for all 19 characters, which were,“Hand-sanded and hand-painted,” according to Laika’s official website. These factors definitely exhibit the painstaking effort the animators experienced.
Considering all of these factors, fans were ecstatic when they learned that one of Laika’s magnum opuses would return to theaters to be enjoyed in 3D. As a treat, viewers who stayed after the credits ended in theaters were shown a brief video containing behind the scenes information. It gave an insider look at the intriguing process for the movie’s animation, as well as revealed that the entire movie was remade from the 2009 version; this means that every single detail was re-created for the 3D debut. The endeavor was undoubtedly a success, considering that the Box Office’s returns reached around $20 million worldwide. After witnessing the overwhelming success of their venture, Laika extended the movie’s showing from 1 week to 2.. Essentially, “Coraline” is a brilliant and stunning movie, and longtime fans were delighted to see it make a reappearance for its 15th birthday.
