What happened to flag football becoming a sport at Viator? Everyone has the chance to play a sport they love or explore a new sport they’ve never heard of through the 32 teams offered at Viator, yet flag football is nowhere to be found. With the fall sports season underway, surrounding schools have started to find success in flag football. The sport’s growing popularity is leaving Viator behind other schools in the area.
“I think flag football can be a great way for students to learn the concept of teamwork,” junior Kaela Swinton said. Teamwork is a vital skill, and from the corporate world to relationships, one will always need it in life. The challenging nature of an unfamiliar environment, such as flag football, improves the skill of teamwork. Teamwork would also help Viator compete against other schools, such as, according to MaxPreps, Hersey who is #12 in the state, and Fremd, who is not far behind at #20. But do girls at Viator even want to play flag football in the first place? One thing that might prevent girls from showing interest is the physicality often linked with football. Not all girls enjoy contact sports, but football is usually associated with heavy contact.
“Flag football is a completely different sport than football in the sense of contact,” said junior Brandon Valenzuela, who plays for the varsity football team. Although they share a similar name and rules, flag football is entirely its own sport. It might not be so much of a question about lack of interest but lack of time.
“All schools need to assess whether their athletic offerings fit the school environment, and that they make sense within he overall framework of which sports are being offered,” Varsity Football Head Coach Dave Archibald said. With so many sports to choose from, students will often stick to and devote their time to sports they are familiar with, resulting in insufficient devotion, necessary to form an entire team. Although flag football is not present at Viator right now, it’s certainly possible to be a popular addition in the future.
