AI should be embraced to some extent because it is inevitable
Artificial Intelligence: long predicted to be the next great technology; the pinnacle of human creation. But with any self-proclaimed peak of anything, it comes with many advantages and disadvantages. One of the biggest issues with AI at the moment is its ability to generate hyper-realistic images, causing problems for celebrities and regular people alike. However, in the school setting, AI could either be the downfall of the school system, or conversely, the next step into the future.
Students have been finding ways to avoid doing homework since the beginning of school itself, and with AI advancing everyday, it’s no surprise that some may take advantage of their easily accessible resources. ChatGPT emerged recently and has gained a reputation for its ability to generate full essays, solve math problems, and answer history questions. However, the tool begs to ask schools how they can adapt and use it to their advantage. Education tools like Quizlet have realized that Artificial Intelligence can assist students in their learning and have implemented AI assistants. If teachers can properly use AI, it could be a positive addition to the students’ learning process.
For example, take a math problem. While some may use AI to just ask what the answer is, it could be beneficial to a struggling student to ask it to explain the problem. This is more beneficial for students because they can see a different explanation than their teacher, understand better going forward, and—since AI is always learning and is not perfect, so it could give a wrong answer—be more likely to get the right answer themselves.
Going back to Quizlet, since the platform has recently started charging money to users for certain aspects, the AI chat has remained free. Since the school doesn’t pay for accounts, but still encourages students to use the app, the “Q-Chat” can be used to quiz students and learn the material.
Regardless of whether or not schools officially utilize artificial intelligence in their curriculum, its use among students is unavoidable. So, because artificial intelligence isn’t going anywhere, it would greatly benefit teachers and students to incorporate it into schools.
