Seven years after its release, the Nintendo Switch’s Life cycle is coming to an end. Its sequel, however, still remains in the dark. The console was dubbed in an article by Gamerant as “Nintendo’s worst kept secret”; fans do know it exists, however, Nintendo refuses to acknowledge it. Excitement surged after the summer of 2023, when rumors about the “Switch Successor” began to surface around the internet. However, most of these rumors ended up being just rumors. As more and more of these articles began to be proven false, fans began to wonder what about the console was fact and what was fiction. The simple answer: most of it is fiction, but there is at least a little fact.
For starters, fans do know the “Switch 2”, as fans call it, exists. The evidence comes from a document of emails between Activision and Nintendo. Most of the document is redacted, however, what is readable is highly insightful. Firstly, the “Switch 2”, is code named NG Switch, possibly meaning Next Generation Switch. Secondly, Activision suggests it will have similar capabilities to a PS4. More evidence comes from a survey conducted by the Game Developers Conference that 8% of more than 3000 developers are working on projects for the “Switch Successor”.
Additionally, several sources reported that Nintendo was demoing the “Switch 2” behind closed doors at the 2023 Gamescom and even gave developer kits. This explains how developers working on projects for the “Switch 2” got the developer kits to work on their projects. Since developer kits are usually given late in a console’s development, this suggests that the “Switch 2” could be coming soon.
As for the release date of the console, it is worth noting Nintendo’s 2024 lineup. As of January 2024, there is almost nothing for the second half of 2024. While this could mean nothing, it is certainly worth noting as it suggests a second half of 2024 release.
In the end, much of what is known about the “Switch 2” is just a rumor and nothing more. However, there are some facts known about the console. Just maybe, very soon, the “Switch 2” could cease to be internet mumblings and become a game console found in stores around the world.
