What a wonderful time of the year, with the arrival of December and many holidays finally here. Christmas has always been a beautiful holiday, showcasing the amazing love of God given to humanity by celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. The celebration of Christmas takes place on December 25th by spending time mostly with our families and friends. From decorating the Christmas tree, adding different types of lights and beautiful ornaments around it, and singing all types of Christmas Carols, there are a plethora of Christmas traditions. One of the many customary traditions during Christmas is dinnertime, which usually includes different dishes such as turkey, ham, roasted potatoes, sugar cookies, gingerbread and–can’t forget it–the cranberry sauce.
Other holidays are important to the nature of the season as well. Another holiday commonly celebrated during this time of the year is New Years on December 31st. As it is the last day of the year, it is important to take a look back at what happened and celebrate with friends and loved ones, think about new year resolutions, and just watch the clock tick until 12:00 A.M. when fireworks go up everywhere to celebrate a new year all around the world. Immaculate Conception Day, on December 8th, is also a holiday of grandeur for Catholics worldwide. The day honors the Virgin Mary in acknowledgement of her birth without original sin, with common traditions on this day including going to Church and feasting.
Apart from holidays, various other traditions also ‘make’ the season in general: playing games, such as board games like Monopoly or festive video games; praying, through remembering and giving thanks to God; and lastly, the friendly nature of gift-giving. It’s truly a beautiful season that can only be experienced once a year. Each one of these holidays and traditions show an important value beyond everyday life, in season and out, and really do contribute to the special feeling of the season.
