Field trips are every student’s dream. Yes, students miss a few of their classes, but they serve an important purpose of enhancing education in unique ways beyond the classroom. Some teachers who have recently gone on field trips with their classes truly showcase Viator’s enthusiasm for field trips.
The science department had its first field trip this year, allowing the AP Environmental Science students to adventure in the Chicago River. This field trip included more than just ‘being’ in nature. Students participated in three stations: one tested water quality, one took on walking in the water to capture macroinvertebrates, and another trekked through a preserve, taking note of plants and animals as they trenched through.
“I look forward to this experience every year,” said AP Environmental Science teacher Mrs. Monika Stevens. “My main concern this year was having the time to go, since this is an AP class and on a tight schedule.” Nonetheless, there has been nothing but positive feedback about the field trip from the mass of students.
The language department followed with all its Italian classes; freshmen and seniors alike explored the new Pompeii Exhibit at the Field Museum. This exhibit opened recently and Italian teacher Mrs. Rullo leapt at the opportunity to attend with her students.
“It’s a little bit of Italy and some history,” Mrs. Rullo said. “I was dying to get out of the [school] building.”
Mrs. Rullo thinks that field trips like this one are imperative.
“It’s extremely important not only to see the language, but also the culture,” she said.
The Italian students also enjoyed their time at the exhibit, checking out molded wax figures of people and ancient artifacts from the people of Pompeii.
The forensics classes are soon taking a trip to Harper College as well, hoping to expand knowledge on forensics careers. Lots of classes and clubs have already been on field trips so early in the year, but regardless, they are here to stay.
