Labor Day has celebrated and recognized the working citizens of this country since 1884 when Peter J. McGuire deemed the first Monday in September to be a celebration that would honor American workers. The celebration was declared a national holiday ten years later by President Grover Cleveland in 1894.
Labor Day is now commemorated with parades, fireworks, and festivals. This yearly event takes place on Labor Day weekend at the Village of Schaumburg and includes an arts and crafts show, a carnival, bingo, a parade, and fireworks. A Taste of Schaumburg also featured local restaurants in Schaumburg. This year, the cost for unlimited rides wristbands was $30 and on sale Sunday-Monday (Sept. 3-4) from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. Roads were blocked off, streets were filled with cars, and tarps were set up everywhere to watch the parade and firework show. The broiling sun and zero clouds made it unpleasant during the day, but a cold, refreshing lemon shake-up or slushy fixed that pretty quickly. It was beautiful at night before the fireworks show started; the carnival closed just as the fireworks show started, but it was lit up in the dark beautifully before then. All of the rides were bright and colorful, and a sense of nostalgia was in the air. Great roller coasters were at the event this year, such as the Zipper, OMG 360, a Ferris Wheel, and many more. Among the amenities featured at SeptemberFest were the face painting and princess character dress-up. Parking this year was a gift from God; a temporary traffic light was put up, making the process a lot easier than it has been in past years. This festival is easily something I look forward to the most towards the end of my summer. Although the heat can be rough, SeptemberFest is a great way to celebrate Labor Day with family and friends!
