Best boy band since One Direction takes stage
“When you mention [Justin] Bieber, Lorde, One Direction: I want to be on that list,” said Kevin Abstract, member of American boy band Brockhampton.
The Hip-Hop group Brockhampton was formed in 2015 and the band currently has 14 members. Based out of California, Brockhampton is signed to the record labels “EMPIRE Distribution” and “Fool’s Gold Records.” Brockhampton released their first album “Saturation” on June 9, 2017, and their second, “Saturation II” on August 25, 2017; recently, they released an album called “Saturation III” containing 15 tracks on December 15, 2017. This is the third album to the trilogy that was written, recorded, edited and released in about six months.
“A lot of rap is the same today, but this album really sticks out,” said freshman Laura Zeman.
“Saturation III” was number 15 on US Billboard 200 and number 5 on US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album. Critics say that “Saturation III” is the best album in the trilogy and has reached highest on the charts out of the three albums by far.
“The songs on the album have a very catchy tune to them, even if you don’t know the words it’s fun to bop your head to the rhythm,” said Zeman.
The group’s appeal can partly be attributed to their acceptance of the “boyband” moniker. They are all personality. A listener may go through an entire song without hearing a single lyric that pertains to their own lives, but Abstract and friends make this acceptable as their audacious, extra-extroverted personalities don’t allow the listener to lose focus.
Many people agree that Brockhampton’s music is great to listen to whether you are familiar with it or not.
“The album gives some kind of story in each of its songs,” said freshman Tyler Haisman.
Hip-Hop music is a great way to send a message via lyrics. Each song on the album is very different with a different message behind it.
“Saturation III is a truly unique album…it displays a wide variety of music,” says Haisman.
Brockhampton wants to continue writing music with a different Hip-Hop styles.
The band currently on tour for their recent album, “Saturation III” and will be performing at the Chicago House of Blues on February 18 and 19. Brockhampton is working on their fourth album, which will be called “Team Effort.”
