Winter is coming soon, and we all know what that means: warm sweaters, peppermint lattes and the beloved musical season.
With anticipation for this year’s upcoming show, we must not forget the amazing productions created in the past. Over the years many wonderful musicals with a wide range of themes have been produced. The musical department has put on shows that are Disney classics, dramas and romance stories. But which of these shows have people enjoyed the most?

“My top five favorite shows have to be shows that I directed more than once, except for one,” said musical director Mrs. Kate Costello. Those would include “West Side Story,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “The Sound of Music,” “The Music Man” and “My Fair Lady.” She loves these shows for many different reasons. Mrs. Costello said that the music, the choreography and the characters are all reasons she adores these productions, and students can agree with Mrs. Costello, for the most part.

An unscientific online Twitter poll shows that 43% of students prefer “Joseph” over the other four options, and 38% of students favor “Footloose” over “Joseph” and the other two, “The Sound of Music” and “The Music Man.” Both are fun, exciting shows with a lot of funny characters, catchy tunes and wild dance moves. It seems as if students love musicals where they know the story and enjoy the jazzed-up tempo of the melodies, and I would have to agree.

From Mrs. Costello’s top five picks of her favorite musicals, mine has to be “Joseph.” It’s spectacular to see a story that I’ve heard growing up finally come to life. The characters have been transformed from words off a page to humorous, lively people, and the music brings each of them together to tell a tale from thousands of years ago. It is truly amazing.
