Friday Double Feature: Quintessential Existential

Eraserhead
This is a working exercise in existential philosophy and a loving favorite of college students. A black-and-white film, “Eraserhead” is set in an industrial park. The film focuses on a couple raising a mutant child. The unbearable child tries their relationship and drives the man insane. As the brainchild of polarizing director David Lynch, “Eraserhead” pushes the boundaries of conventional thought and taste. Despite the somewhat dense story, it is a worthy conquest for the intellectually adventurous.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
A psychedelic road trip into a nightmare, this film questions the very essence of existence. Johnny Depp plays author Hunter S. Thompson, who wrote the book upon which the film is based. Depp’s real-life obsession with Thompson allows him to embody the man perfectly. Descending into the drug-fueled depravity of Las Vegas, the film reveals the existential cost of drug use on the human soul. This is a journey worth experiencing.
