The Viator Voice recently spoke with Mr. Donald Moore, a new Theology
teacher, to find out more about him as a new addition to our staff. The interview
is as follows.
Where did you teach previously? What schools and for how long?
“I taught 7th, 9th, and 12th grade theology
at Saint Benedict college prep and was
also the campus minister. Doctor M gave
me my fi rst job. After 4 years I went to IC
catholic prep and taught 9th and 12th grade
Theology and was also the campus minister
there. After 7 years at IC Prep I went to
Nazareth to teach 9th, 10th and 12th grade
Theology and after 4 years there I went
to Saint Viator.”
Where did you go to college?
“I went to Knox college in central Illinois
and played D3 basketball there. I double
majored in anthropology and sociology
with a focus in social services. A few years
after graduating I went back to get a masters
degree. Got a degree of master of arts
of social justice.”
What made you want to do what you
are doing? Did you always know?
“I knew I always wanted to work with
young people. In what context I wasn’t sure.
I didn’t always think it was gonna be education.
I started in counseling and that led me
up to the classroom. It was something that I
knew right away was the right choice.”
Are you married and do you have
kids?
“I have been married to my wife Kelly for
12 years and we have two small boys. Liam
is 9 and in 4th grade. Owen is 5 and in kindergarten.
Both boys are getting into sports
including soccer and basketball.”
What are your hobbies?
“I enjoy coaching, which is a passion of
mine. I coach boys basketball here at Viator.
I used to coach girls volleyball, basketball
and softball. I like to play pickleball
and basketball. I love going out to dinner
and seeing live music and I love watching
my kids do what they love.”
What is your favorite teaching mem-
ry?
“While I was coaching at Nazareth, the
team was going through a period where we
were struggling. After practice one day I
gathered everyone at center court and I read
a passage from one of my favorite books. I
used the words as a framework for the team
to operate. It really served as a threshold
moment. After that I saw things start to get
better which was really special.”
