Jazz musician Roy Ayers believed that “the true beauty of music is that it connects people.” At Saint Viator, this proves to be true through the brand new, reimagined choir program.
Last May, Mrs. Joleen Kragt decided to come back to Saint Viator as the new choir director, after previously teaching at Viator from 2015 to 2020.
“It is my goal to help our current students to understand that you CAN use all of your talents and interests, not just confine yourself to being just one thing. For the majority, I really just want them to understand that music will help bring so much joy in your life and make you a well-rounded person, inside and out!
The reimagined music program has already made tremendous waves. From the national anthem singers for sports, all the way to our incredible chorus for mass, music has been steadily integrated into daily Viator life. It has also had a massive impact on the Saint Viator Community.
“When I came to Viator, I was so scared because no one knew me.” said freshman Angela Grbevski. “I was walking into something completely new. But the second I walked into that choir room I got warmly welcomed. Viator Choir is a community itself. All the people there are like a family.”
“We sing out all the masses and school events when we need to. We bring spirit. Music brings people together.”
Music truly does bring people together, both physically and spiritually. This year the music ministry program has grown immensely thanks to Mrs. Kragt’s influence.
“I love that music certainly can draw people closer to God and I am very pleased to have the opportunity to be some small piece in that process.”
Mrs. Kragt encourages everyone to join the choir, noting that it is a fun and tight knit group.
“There’s a whole other very exciting musical world out there for you to explore and to develop your skills. Take risks, grab some friends and allow me to help you grow those talents… Let’s do this together!”
