The Querbes Symposium is an annual event led by senior Querbes Scholars that gives students a break from the usual classroom routine. Instead of worrying about tests, grades or homework, the symposium creates time for real conversations about meaningful and sometimes difficult topics. It gives the Saint Viator community a chance to slow down, think more deeply, and talk about ideas that do not always fit into a normal class period.
What makes the Querbes Symposium especially unique is that it is completely student-led.
Seniors choose modern day topics they genuinely care about and spend time researching difficult viewpoints.
As senior Erin Lynch explains, “We research and develop arguments about a relevant modern-day topic, and then the panelists debate the various perspectives on the subject and the impacts they have on society during the symposium.” Because students are running the discussion, the environment feels more relaxed and authentic. While presenting in front of classmates and teachers can be intimidating, it can also be very rewarding. Without the pressure of being graded, people feel more comfortable speaking honestly, asking questions, and even respectfully disagreeing.
The topics discussed during the symposium are often complex and thought-provoking. They can focus on ethical issues, social problems, or questions about the future. These conversations encourage students to step outside of their own perspectives and consider how others experience the world. For many students, this is one of the few times in school where they truly feel like their opinions matter, which makes the experience more impactful and memorable.
The symposium also strengthens the school’s community. Teachers participate in discussions not as lectures, but as listeners and contributors. This helps break down the usual classroom dynamic and reminds everyone that learning is something shared. Underclassmen who attend often leave inspired and excited for the chance to participate as presenters when they become seniors.
Overall, the Querbes Symposium is more than just an academic requirement. It represents curiosity, confidence, and open mindedness within the Saint Viator community. It encourages students to think critically, speak thoughtfully, and listen respectfully. For many seniors, it can be a reminder that meaningful conversations are just as important as traditional academics in creating the high school experience.
