As one of Viator’s newest and fastest-growing clubs, DECA has quickly stood out as an opportunity for students interested in business, leadership, and real-world problem-solving. Now in its second year, led by founders Joe Lang and Colin Smith and moderated by Mr. Lyons, the competitive business organization prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs through hands-on experiences in fields like finance, marketing, hospitality, and management.
“DECA is a business organization in high school where students get a chance to present their findings and thoughts in simulations in the business area, with different individual and team role-play situations that progress from regionals to state and national competitions,” said DECA Moderator Mr. David Lyons.
This year, Lyons hopes to strengthen the club’s foundation and build a pipeline of future leaders. With 32 students already participating, he sees tremendous potential for growth.
“My goal is for students to gain more experience,” said Lyons, “It’s difficult to see real progress unless you continue practicing, and I also want to grow the club and have the next set of leaders step up.”
DECA offers a wide range of competitive events, giving members the chance to explore different industries and interests.
“Students can participate in written events, slide-deck presentations, and business simulations, focusing on areas like finance, accounting, entrepreneurship, hospitality, and even automotive,” said Lyons.
Beyond competitions, DECA focuses heavily on building essential life skills. “Public speaking, confidence, and being able to think on your feet are some of the biggest skills students gain; if you’re not comfortable with public speaking, this will help you hone your abilities,” said Lyons.
Lyons believes DECA is valuable for all students, regardless of their academic track or career goals. “All students benefit because everyone needs public speaking at some point, ” said Lyons.
As the club grows, one challenge will be developing new leaders once current upperclassmen graduate. Overall, though, Lyons hopes DECA will continue shaping confident and capable students for years to come. “These are skills you’ll need down the road, and anyone at any level can benefit,” said Lyons. Students interested in joining can simply attend meetings, and new members will be welcomed next year.
