Over the past decade, social media has become a major part of society. Social media has been criticized by many for having a negative effect on students but there are lots of benefits to social media. Social media can improve students not only socially, but also academically and in their clubs and sports.
One of the biggest benefits of social media is its ability to allow students to communicate with others. Apps like Snapchat enable students to communicate outside of school. This allows students to grow stronger relationships with their friends and meet others. Communication with other students also helps benefit our clubs and sports at school as you can communicate with other club members through social media. Say you have a meeting tomorrow and want to make sure everyone comes, you can simply message the club on a social media app like Snapchat and then everyone will be aware of the meeting. This is more beneficial than emailing as not everyone checks their email all the time but almost everyone checks their phone.
Social media is great for communicating with friends but it also has lots of academic benefits. YouTube is one of the most powerful social media tools for learning. Anything you want to learn you can likely find on YouTube. YouTube has all sorts of guides from all sorts of people all over the world. Many teachers from a variety of schools have YouTube channels where they teach concepts and post them for the world to see. Let’s say you’re struggling with a Pythagorean theorem problem in math. Simply searching up the Pythagorean theorem will lead to a variety of videos going over the concept and how to solve problems using the Pythagorean theorem. This is very powerful and helpful. Many students can benefit from learning off YouTube and this can be a major difference between understanding and not understanding a concept.
Overall, social media can have a very positive impact on students. Social media allows for students to communicate better and learn new concepts. When used right, social media can make all the difference a student needs to be successful.
