College football has been very exciting to watch this year, with breakout stars, all-time games and a fun college football playoff ahead of us. Players like Ashton Jeanty and Travis Hunter have been taking the country by storm, showing their execution and insane numbers on the field. Teams like Indiana and BYU have been dominating when it seemed like nobody expected it. The NCAA is using a brand-new twelve team playoff format, completely different then the old four team format that was used.
To start, we need to recognize the players who are in contention to win the Heisman award—the award given to the best player in college football each year. The two clear candidates (as of now) are Ashton Jeanty and Travis Hunter. Jeanty, a running back, has been putting up historical numbers, averaging over 7 yards per carry and putting the Boise State football team on his back. If he won, he would be the first running back to win the Heisman trophy since 2015. Travis Hunter, however, is doing something historical. He has been playing both offense and defense as a wide receiver and defensive back at a high level, something almost no person has done. He has been playing almost every snap for the Colorado Buffaloes, and his impact has shown, leading the Buffaloes to a great season so far. Some other top quarterbacks are making a big case, such as Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe, Miami quarterback Cam Ward, and Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel.
“I would have to say Jalen Milroe is the best quarterback in college football” said Saint Viator freshman Dom Massarelli.
It is also important to talk about some of the teams that are in contention to win the college football playoff. In the Big 10, the top teams are Oregon and Ohio State. However, watch out for teams like the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Indiana Hoosiers, who will both look to make damage in the big ten. The winner of the Big 10 will receive a top four seed in the college football playoff. As for the SEC, the top teams are Texas, Georgia and Tennessee. The winner of that conference will also receive a top four seed. The winner of the two other highest ranked conferences will receive the other top four seeds. As for the other eight seeds, it will be ranked based on college football ranking. Some teams to watch out for are Notre Dame, Boise State and Colorado.
