With Homecoming being just in a few weeks, the Saint Viator community has its opinions on this year’s theme, Ancient Greece, and what makes a great Homecoming.
Homecoming is a century old tradition for many high schools that serves as an opportunity to dress up with friends and show school spirit. When paired with a fun theme and activities, the week leading up to Homecoming is also filled with excitement. All students look forward to Homecoming, although some Saint Viator students voice their opinions on how to improve the celebration.
“There were other themes that would have been better” said junior Domenika Davis.
Though I would have to agree that the theme Ancient Greece might be a little hard to execute, I cannot remember the homecoming themes of the past years or say that they impacted my experience of the dance at all. No students dress according to the theme anyway and the most we will see from it is an Ancient Greece backdrop for pictures, if even that.
“It’s okay,” said Junior Kellie Boyd. She also mentions that the dance would be better if food was offered. Though food being served at Homecoming may be asking for a lot, many other high schools do serve food at their homecomings and it probably wouldn’t hurt the attendance of our homecoming either. The cleanup afterwards may be a problem but surely it wouldn’t be too hard to clean up after ourselves or have some student volunteers do it afterwards for service hours.
My opinion of homecoming is that it has its ups and downs. Every year I go to homecoming and every year I am left disappointed and regretful to have gone. The dance is composed of some random DJ spending the whole evening talking over the songs, trying to relate to us “youngsters.” Personally I would not be surprised if I heard the words “skibidi” or “rizz” come out of his mouth at least once during the dance.
The real test that the 2024 Saint Viator Homecoming will face is the freshman opinion.
“I am excited to experience homecoming for the first time,” said freshman Nina Dzierzanowska. I can only hope that it goes well for her and her fellow classmates.
Aside from the freshman, the growing unimpressed attitude about homecoming among Saint Viator students may be troubling. I think it serves as a warning that if we want to have a closer community we have to do something to fix these activities, starting with arguably one of the biggest events of the year, Homecoming. Decreased attendance at huge events is not what we want to see, especially when the school’s slogan this year is “Better Together.”
Is Homecoming really all that?
