NFL Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin states, “It’s not about what you’re capable of, it’s about what you’re willing to do.” Coaching is the art of bringing out the best in your players. Coaching is important at Saint Viator to bring the best of what is offered in the players and team.
Being a coach is not easy because it takes a lot of time and effort learning the game. It also requires a lot of experience in the game to know how to play. Being a coach will require time and energy, but most people just criticize their coaches. Coaches have to build a bond with each of their players and explain things to each player in a unique way. Good coaches for Saint Viator will mean more success in sports, as well as players being well-rounded athletes.
“I love MLB [tennis coach Mary Louise Blaney] as a coach because she is very good at giving corrections to my playing and she knows how to make everyone laugh as well,” said junior Brianna Santucci. “She is an overall great player and I love her teaching style because she always knows how to put it in a way where you understand. Sometimes certain coaches say something to you and you don’t really know what they’re telling you to do so you don’t apply it. MLB is the opposite. I always understand what she’s trying to correct me on and for that I love her as a coach. She is one of my favorite tennis coaches I’ve had, also, because of her humor. She’s always so funny and she knows how to make us laugh. Most of her jokes consist of her making fun of the other team and making fun of what we did when we make stupid mistakes. I always laugh, even after [losing] a match, when she cracks a joke. She’s one of the best coaches you can have for tennis by far….Coaching is important because it brings out the best within the players. It is important for the coaches to have knowledge in what they are doing as that will make it so they can fully understand the unique players at their use to create the best team possible.”
Santucci said she has built a relationship with her coach where they can be serious and joke around, having a good time. This is essential for players to be successful. Most players look up to their coaches as role models on the field and in real life.
“I think that good coaches are important because they teach you how to be a great player with even better discipline,” said sophomore football and basketball player Brandon Valenzuela.
Good coaching instills confidence and good values inside of the players which is very advantageous to the team and the Saint Viator community. They instill lifelong values such as discipline, a good mindset, a healthy lifestyle, temperance, and attributes that make players more well rounded.
“Good coaching is important because [it] makes the team better by making us better,” says senior Jack Raclaw. “It makes us bond with the coach and makes us [closer to our] team. I remember my soccer coach, Yousif. He was really organized and he had a very good relationship with the players.”
As stated by Raclaw, good coaching helps players bond with the coach and their teammates. This makes players enjoy their sport more.The sport feels more like a home and a community than just an extracurricular activity. Good coaching is able to make players happier when they are at their sport.
To summarize, good coaching makes the player a more well-rounded athlete, a more confident player, and a person who is able to enjoy the sport more. Good coaching will be able to create more success on the field. In addition to the field, good coaching can help the Saint Viator community be healthier and happier.
