Gym class usually means playing regular sports, but some people think we should mix it up. The idea is to offer different kinds of activities in physical education (PE) to fit everyone’s interests and abilities.
“I would like more options for units in P.E,” said junior Danny Serwa.
Expanding PE options means adding things like swimming, wrestling, rock climbing, dancing, and even relaxation exercises. The goal is to give students more choices beyond the usual sports. This could be a game-changer for those who don’t love traditional athletics or might not be great at them. The thinking is that by offering a variety of activities, schools can get more students excited about staying active. Supporters of this idea say it’s about time we recognize that not everyone likes or excels at typical sports. Adding different activities could also make PE more inclusive for students with various physical abilities. PE teachers and experts say that expanding the types of activities in gym class can lead to more engagement, more physical activity, and overall better well-being for students.
“I would like more options in P.E. so we can choose to do something we like” said junior Marty Schliep.
If schools can offer a mix of options, it might help students find activities they actually enjoy and want to stick with even after school. So, in the end, the push to shake up gym class is really about making sure all students can find something they like. It’s not just about staying fit during school; it’s about creating habits for a healthy life. As we look at making education more well-rounded, changing up PE classes could be a crucial step toward making sure everyone has a shot at a fit and happy future.
