Some of the most well known sports at Saint Viator are football, volleyball, ice hockey and basketball. But what about the sports most people aren’t aware of? What about sports like bowling? Although the bowling team was pretty small in the past, it has grown exponentially this year, becoming a team of 40 students. This growth sits well with members who have recently joined.
“I think the team is pretty big, but it’s a good amount. I’d be okay with it getting bigger and growing the same way it has been,” said freshman Kennet Doyle, a first-year bowler.
Other members who have been on the team for a longer period of time have different perspectives.
“Sometimes it feels like there are too many people on the team. It can be overwhelming at times. It’s such a drastic change from when I started. Still, it is nice to see more people interested,” said junior Caroline Schermerhorn, a veteran bowler.
Although people have varying views on how big a bowling team should be, everyone has followed the same path to join the team.
“I discovered the team through a friend. We wanted to try bowling. I think it’s gotten more popular, and people have joined for the same reason I did,” said Schermerhorn.
With many of the bowlers discovering the team through friends, the team’s friendly nature has created a pleasant environment. Many people can bowl with their close friends, and everyone cheers for one another. Oftentimes, the more experienced bowlers go out of their way to help new members.
“I think the bowling team has grown so much due to the welcoming environment, something all team members have embraced,” said Coach Andrew Weber ‘12, the varsity bowling head coach.
With the surplus of players joining each year, the bowling team will likely look different next year.
“We’ll have separate boys and girls teams,” said Coach Weber, “but I expect the same excitement and high levels of participation from incoming freshmen.”
