The varsity football team lost to the Saint Ignatius Wolves on Oct. 13 at home with a final score of 46-14. The game was initially unproductive for both the home offense and defense, but picked up later on.
Saint Ignatius College Prep received the kick at the start of the game, and within three minutes of their opening drive they scored a 68 yard rushing touchdown to go up by 7. SVHS’s first drive led to an interception and then a subsequent touchdown. After two quarters of dominance from both the SICP offense and defense, the score at halftime was SVHS-0 SICP-39.
“The passing game wasn’t good,” said quarterback Cooper Kmet, junior. In the second half, however, SVHS looked better as wide receiver Wyatt Fleck, sophomore, scored the first set of points for SVHS, making the score SVHS- 7 SICP-46. In the 4th quarter with under a minute left, Kmet caught a 9 yard touchdown pass to end the game. Although the first half was ugly, the defense made good stops and on offense outscored SICP in the second half scoring 14 points as opposed to 7 points for Saint Ignatious.
“We did our job on defense, and things were rolling. We fed off the momentum” said Linebacker Phu Trong, senior, about the second half performance.
