Sony unlocks ‘Uncharted’ territory in its debut film

“Greatness from small beginnings.” The “Uncharted” series truly has become one of the greatest franchises on the PlayStation console since its inception nearly fifteen years ago, living up to Drake’s iconic motto. The adventures of Nathan Drake have become legends to all gamers. From the mythical city of Shambhala to the fabled pirate utopia of Libertalia, the “Uncharted” series has allowed its players to travel the world. Recently, Sony has finished producing a movie based on the series, bearing the same name, and it has brought a divide to the fandom between.

“Uncharted” follows Nathan Drake, played by Tom Holland, as he embarks on a journey to find the great treasure of Magellan with his partner Victor “Sully” Sullivan, played by Mark Wahlberg. They are met with hostility by Moncada, a distant descendant of the family that owned the treasure, played by Antonio Banderas. As seen in the trailers, they battle Moncada’s thugs with the help of Chloe Frazer, another treasure hunter.

Understandably, the fans of the original game series are quite worried the “Uncharted” movie will not stay true to the source material. Although Sony has produced it, there are many questions as to why they have decided to change aspects of Drake’s iconic journeys in the new movie. For example, Nathan and Sully meet in an entirely different location, roughly five to ten years after they meet in the video game canon. Even the most iconic aspect of Sully’s character, his mustache, is absent from the trailers.

Additionally, the movie has been in production for several years. In fact, Mark Wahlberg was originally supposed to play an older Nathan Drake. Production has been delayed many times through the pandemic and change of direction. In the midst of such uncertainty, many fans have lost faith that Sony knows the best way to stay true to the classic games.

However, there is much promise from the new film as well. Tom Holland has expressed his love for the games several times, and his goal to appease all fans, both old and new. Nolan North, the original voice actor for Nathan Drake from the games, was asked to visit the set during the filming process and was extremely impressed with the production of the film.

Either way, fans are excited to see their favorite characters brought back to life, this time on the big screen. “Uncharted” is in theaters everywhere February 18th.
