At the beginning of the season, the Chicago Cubs were considered the young, inexperienced team of the National League central division, looking to make their mark on the league. Soon the MLB realized the young unit was a force, pushing its way into the discussion for postseason baseball. Thus, the North Siders revived playoff baseball in Chicago, causing a frenzy of excitement throughout the city.

The first half of the season allowed players Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo to rise to the top of their respective positions. Each earning a spot on the all-star team, they performed at a high level leading the Cubs to a great start. According to MLB.com, Anthony Rizzo is batting .285 with 29 HR and 88 RBI as of Sept. 10th. The true leader of the team and only 26 years old, Rizzo acts as a veteran and constantly gets the job done in tough situations. Rookie of the Year candidate Kris Bryant is batting .267 knocking in 86 RBI with 23 HR. Bryant, with all the hype surrounding him, acted as a spark for the offense by providing protection for Rizzo in the lineup.

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

Other young studs include late call up Kyle Schwarber and defensive gem Addison Russell. Russell has provided all-star type defense at shortstop, while improving at the plate becoming one of the Cubs clutch hitters. Meanwhile according to MLB.com, since he was called up after the All-Star break, Schwarber has posted a .262 average with 13 HR and 38 RBI. Proving even more pop in the already dangerous lineup, Schwarber has solidified the Cubs as a lethal offense.

Another key to success for the Cubs has been the emergence of Jake Arrieta as a true ace. Coming on strong during the second half, he has solidified the rotation with newly signed Jon Lester. “Arrieta has been a solid pitcher for a couple of years now, he is coming on to be a Cy Young contender for many years to come” said Saint Viator pitcher and Cubs enthusiast, junior Brett DeSelm. The newly established ace has pitched himself into the top five in most major pitching categories. With the hope of a young pitcher in future years, the Cubs plan on riding the success of Arrieta for years to come.

The success of the season has been a tremendous improvement from recent years for the organization. Knowing the capability of the youthful lineup, the upcoming seasons will depend on the consistency of the team. Brice Hellgeth, a sophomore in the baseball program summed up the uncertainty and the optimism of the team.

“Consistency from players… on both offense and defense have and will continue to guide this young team to more and more wins.”
