A Christmas (Toy) Story

Imagine this: you wake up on Christmas morning, rush towards your Christmas tree, and find….a Cabbage Patch Kid laying under it? In 1983, Cabbage Patch Kids were extremely popular gifts for children.

Every year there is always a new, popular toy among children that bring them so much joy when they find it lying under their Christmas tree. Obviously, children’s toys have evolved over the years, but that joy still remains the same.

In 1984, before the movies even existed, Transformers were a big deal. They were toy vehicles with parts that could be shifted to form a robot. From 1985 to 1986, the most popular toy was a Teddy Ruxpin bear. It was a talking, animatronic bear that would tell stories from the cassette tape on its back. In the late 80s, the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Game Boy were introduced. They were both used for gaming, except the Nintendo was an 8-bit video game console, and the Game Boy was a handheld gaming device. 1990 brought along Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which were created shortly after the namesake movie was made. Other popular toys throughout the 90s include: Barney, Beanie Babies, Tickle Me Elmo, a handheld virtual pet called Tamagotchi, Furby, and Pokémon. Throughout the last decade the popular toys that might bring you some nostalgia have been: Razor Scooters from 2000, Bratz dolls created in 2001, Beyblade spinning tops that came in 2002, XBox 360s which were first introduced in 2005, Nintendo Wii which shortly followed the XBox 360 in 2008, and Zhu Zhu pets which were all the rage in 2009. More recently, the toys that have completely taken the world by storm are: Elsa Dolls in 2014, BB-8 from Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, Hatchimals (interactive toy eggs) and retro-style gaming system NES Classic in 2016, as well as collectible baby monkeys called Fingerlings in 2017.

We’ll have to wait and see what toys will dominate the top of every kid’s Christmas list this year.
