Election gets dirty, easily distracts voters

A presidential election: a time of political warfare and voter confusion. As we approach the 2016 presidential election, it has become clear that candidates are ready to get down to business and put their best foot forward; however, some candidates, such as Republican Donald Trump, have chosen to follow a different path.
In recent months, Trump’s name has been all over the news and other media outlets for some not-so-flattering reasons. Trump has been criticized for his racist comments toward immigrants and their families and his insulting comments toward Senator John McCain, which involved his service in the Vietnam War. Trump stated that McCain “was only a war hero because he was captured”, and went on to say that he favors those who are not captured. Trump received widespread criticism for these remarks and seemed to do harm to his campaign with a loss of Hispanic and veteran voter support.
In an interview with CNN Reporter Anderson Cooper, Trump was asked if he would change his tone as President, answering “Oh, I’d think so. I’d change my tone.” A statement like this can be puzzling. Trump makes it seem as if he is only saying such comments to garner attention and publicity for his campaign, leaving voters questioning how the real estate mogul will ever enter the Oval Office.
When considering who to vote for in an election, voters need to consider what qualities that candidates bring to the table. The 2016 election seems to have become more of a war between candidates, rather than a campaign for the highest position of authority in the country. Voters have become distracted by the unnecessary banter of the candidates and, as a result, do not know what these candidates have planned for the presidency, such as economic policies.Voters need to disconnect themselves from candidates who only seem to care about their own personal matters, such as Donald Trump, and seek out the candidates who connect with their personal views and demonstrate the most promise. The 2016 election has proven to be interesting thus far, and the final outcome is anxiously awaited.
