Finding a coach that will fill the shoes of former head coach Mr. Brandon New will be a daunting task. After Mr. New resigned as head coach of the varsity Lions football team in early November, the athletic department quickly responded by setting out a search team for a new coach. Mr. Martin Jennings, the head of the athletic department, is looking for three qualities in the new head coach: character, organization and preparation.

“The key to character is interaction with kids and players,” said Mr. Jennings. Not only is quality of character necessary.

“An effective coach will “organize schemes in a way that provides our kids, coaches and programs the greatest opportunity for success on a day-to-day basis,” said Mr. Jennings. “Just like a teacher in a classroom, a coach must provide opportunities for our kids to learn and grow in the game of football and to achieve their maximum potential as an athlete.”

The athletic department hopes to find a coach who will build on the creative foundation of hard-work, teamwork and family brought by Mr. New.

Mr. Jennings does not see success as defined by record or wins and losses, but rather as something achieved on a daily basis. Over the next two weeks President Fr. Corey Brost and Mr. Jennings will field the applicants for someone who exhibits all the characteristics of a good coach .

“We’re looking for someone who will be the next best leader for the kids at Saint Viator.”
