As the year comes to an end two major holidays take the spotlight: Thanksgiving and Christmas. Both are beloved holidays celebrated by Americans across the country, but one tends to get more recognition than the other.
Thanksgiving is not only underappreciated, it lives in thed shadow of the Christmas season. Too often do we see Christmas trees set up and Christmas lights hung up throughout neighbourhoods and stores during the Thanksgiving holiday. Thanksgiving deserves to be celebrated by itself without Christmas stealing its glory. Christmas trees should not be set up until a day or two after Thanksgiving because too many times do we fly right past Thanksgiving and miss what it is all about: spending time being thankful for the people who we care about most. Senior Matthew Wallace agrees with this claim when asked the question of when Christmas trees should be set up.
When asked if Thanksgiving should get more recognition, Matthew said, “I totally agree that Christmas nudges in and takes over the Thanksgiving holiday and it does deserve more recognition for what it is”.
On the other hand, however, Christmas is the most exciting holiday to look forward to and there are many families that set up Christmas trees in excitement of the holiday. There are also people that set up their trees to decorate it with Thanksgiving themes leading into the holiday season. The season of Christmas also gets people in a jolly mood and many people think that Thanksgiving and Christmas should almost be combined.
Now, many people believe that Christmas and Thanksgiving should be celebrated separately and one should be celebrated before. Not a lot of people appreciate the Thanksgiving season and this leads them to almost forget the holiday all together. This causes the people to start celebrating the Christmas season too early. In our own society we can see that Thanksgiving is forgotten. Christmas music starts to be played in early November, people start buying their trees and lights, but there’s nothing for Thanksgiving.
We all love Christmas, but what about Thanksgiving?
