Friday Double Feature: Frigid Films

Fargo (R)

This winter, curl up with a quirky comedy about murderous mishaps in the snowy Midwest. Fargo is a black comedy by the Coen Brothers, famous for making No Country for Old Men and The Big Lebowski. When the affable Jerry Lundegaard attempts to carry out a murder in snowy Minnesota, hijinks ensue as he is investigated by the pregnant detective Marge Gunderson. The artistic style and comedic touch that is a trademark in Coen Brothers films is ever present in this one and is a fun departure from your conventional winter movies.

The Hateful Eight (R)

Who could forget the sweeping snowy landscapes that open the latest Quentin Tarantino film. Shot in 65mm with ultra panavision lenses and projected in 70mm, not only the landscapes, but the mediums and close-ups all sprawl across the screen in glorious beauty. The shot composition is not the only reason to watch this movie. Tarantino’s Hitchcockian command of suspense and his even more precise dialogue make the movie one of Tarantino’s best and a worthy inclusion for your winter movie arsenal.
