Field hockey club creates unique, new athletic opportunity for girls
Girls’ field hockey is a new athletic club of 2017 that has already gained popularity among the student body. The game of field hockey is very similar to that of ice hockey, soccer, and lacrosse and is played with hooked sticks, a ball, and goals. Two teams, each with eleven players on the field, attempt to score as many goals as possible by hitting the ball into the opposer’s goal with their sticks before the end of two thirty-minute halves. The high school season for field hockey lasts from August to October. \
Sophomore Vallie Scotti created field hockey club out of love for the sport and passion in creating an activity that encourages girls to try something new.
“I started up the club because I wanted girls at Viator to be able to experience the one of a kind sport that field hockey is,” said Scotti.
As a new sports club, the field hockey team has done remarkably well so far in their season.
“Other coaches have come up to me after games to say they are impressed with the team,” said Mrs. Kathy Gallagher, the assistant coach of the club. “I was very happy with how much all of the girls progressed throughout the season.”
Field hockey club is a no-cut sport that welcomes all new members without regards to previous experience. This new club is looking to provide great athletic experience and build a family-like team both on and off the field.
“Games aren’t won from goals alone; they’re won by teams who play with their hearts,” Scotti stated.
