Suicide Squad
Suicide Squad, a more recent release, was yet another successful summer movie. Actors most memorable were Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Will Smith as Deadshot, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. There is much controversy over the character Harley Quinn: critics make the argument that her only true role or place at all in the movie is to add the oversexualized female presence that has become the norm. However, these critics fail to realize that Harley Quinn’s character in this circumstance was represented fairly accurately. Harley, originally Dr. Quinzel, suffering from Stockholm Syndrome, falls in love with the Joker of Gotham City after being assigned to be his therapist in captivity. Her character as originally written in the comics is the kind of promiscuous yet devoted and plainly sexual character that Robbie plays on screen through her lines and wardrobe. Because the movie is the adaptation of a comic’s idea, critics have no argument to make when accusing the script writers of twisting Harley Quinn’s character: her already stereotyped promiscuity fell right into their laps. Harley Quinn also plays the arguably most important role in saving the world at the end of the movie. Davis as Amanda Waller puts on another fantastic performance: she perfectly represents the stern, firm and cruel (even self-interested) character of Amanda Waller. The true leader and organizer of the Suicide Squad, Waller’s character must have no room for weakness or even relative sympathy. Jared Leto, however, delivered a disappointing representation of The Joker, and not even due to his acting: the character was devoid of the iconic scars on his face, and there was a total lack of the voices The Joker hears in his head, one of his primary characterizations. Leto’s actual performance, excepting makeup and effects, was largely impressive, as it is difficult for yet another actor to put an original spin on The Joker’s character (where he succeeded). The soundtrack for the movie was immediately loved by viewers and critics alike, featuring artists such as Skrillex, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Imagine Dragons, twenty one pilots, G-Eazy, Eminem and Panic! at the Disco. Suicide Sqaud, despite largely negative critic reviews, has so far been deemed a fan-favorite and has received primarily positive reviews from the general public.
