Captain America: Civil War

Captain America: Civil War was one of the most anticipated movies of the summer: merchandising skyrocketed, Marvel comic books were flying off the shelves and fans avidly bought tickets far in advance. There is debate, however, as to whether the movie lived up to it’s hype and expectation. Steve Rogers/Captain America, played by Chris Evans, is ever the moral compass in other Marvel movies, however Civil War and The Winter Soldier both featured plot lines highlighting a dilemma of conscience, bringing an all-too familiar theme to theaters this summer. Robert Downey Jr., playing Iron Man/Tony Stark, was at odds with Rogers for most of the film, another common theme, but also the previously-expected and known plot of the movie to begin with. This time, their conflict escalated. Civil War, excitingly, includes all Marvel cinematic universe characters thus far who choose sides: Stark or Rogers. In the movie, stemming from the newly instated “Superhuman Registration Act” is the catalyst of the fight: Stark supports, and Rogers does not. Another huge source of conflict in the movie is Rogers’ want to protect his long-time but dangerous friend, Bucky Barnes, who may not even have control over himself; Stark wants to bring Barnes in. A plot twist at the movie’s end shocks the viewer, until they realize how the film had been building to it subtly since the beginning. Civil War’s success made 1.132 billion dollars, and it is currently leading the box office worldwide.
