Christmas music evolves across decades

When asked about the Holidays, some people might bring up Christmas presents, others Santa Claus, and even more might bring up family. One aspect of the Holidays that is shared by everyone is Christmas music. Christmas music has been playing, written, and rewritten for many years. The most famous Christmas songs have been those written years ago, but remixed and re-sung by various artists throughout the years. Some of those songs include “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, “Baby It’s Cold Outside “, and everybody’s favorite “White Christmas”. These Christmas songs have been sung by artists from Frank Sinatra to Kelly Clarkson and everyone in-between.“Santa Claus is Coming to Town” was originally written by Jonathan Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie in 1934, which became an instant hit. Most famously being sung by Frank Sinatra in 1948, Sinatra gave the song his own jazz spin. In later years, another artist that truly sticks out with this song is the Jackson 5. A song full of energy and old Motown soul, the Jackson 5 put a modern twist on a true classic, putting it down in the books. Finally one of the most famous versions of this song in Bruce Springsteen’s version where he starts the song confronting the audience about how good they’ve been the past year. Along with the wonderful saxophone solo, Springsteen gives this song the true feel of Christmas. Christmas songs are about all aspects of the Holiday season, some about Santa, and some about Holiday Romance.
Originally sung by Ricardo Montalban and Esther Williams in 1959 and written by Frank Loesser in the early 1940s, “Baby It’s Cold Out Side” is about a man who wants his love to stay with him, but she has to go home.  Again sung by big band artists including Frank Sinatra and Michael Buble, the old time and modern singer give this song a slow calm feeling when you just want to stay inside on a cold wintery night. In 1959, Dean Martin takes over the song with his female chorus in a more upbeat version of the song. Most recently, in 2013, Lady Gaga and Joseph Gordon-Levitt give the song a small modern pop twist with Gaga begging Gordon-Levitt to stay with her. With every Christmas there are certain necessities, including Santa Claus, someone special to share the Holidays with, and a White Christmas.
“White Christmas” is probably the most famous Christmas song, written by Irving Berlin in 1940 and original performed by Bing Crosby in 1942, “White Christmas has had over 130 different versions. Sung by artists from Frank Sinatra and Freddy Martin, to Elvis Presley, to John Denver, to Michael Buble and Destiny’s Child, and as recently as Pentatonix “White Christmas” is the icon of Christmas music.
As generations get older and new ones come in, many parts of life are going to change. However, one part of life that has stood and will stand the test of time is Christmas music.
